St Magnus
In 1137, a beautiful cathedral was founded in Kirkwall, Orkney, in memory of St Magnus the Martyr. Built in warm red and yellow sandstone, gracefully decorated, Saint Magnus Cathedral remains the spiritual heart of these islands.
Ola grew up in the flat above her parents' grocery shop, Kirkness & Gorie, which lay directly across Broad Street from the cathedral. So every day she would look out on its glowing sandstone, its beautiful carvings, and its intricate stained glass windows. In those days children often played in the kirkyard around the cathedral, and even in the kirk itself - running up the spiral staircases right to the top of the spire!
Ola's St Magnus collection is based on a stylised cross carved out of sandstone: a particularly graceful Norse interpretation, that has come to be considered one of Orkney's iconic images.
